Conference At K-9 CoachTM, one of our core values is to contribute to the dog training profession by developing and hosting educational seminars and conferences for our colleagues, rescue and other dog service organizations as well as the general public. To that end, we are extremely pleased to announce that K-9 Coach and Canine Behavior Clinic have partnered to develop and host the seminar event of the year - "A Weekend with the Dunbars" featuring Dr. Ian and Kelly Dunbar. This unforgettable weekend is scheduled for December 6 & 7, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia at Zoo Atlanta. Located in historic Grant Park, minutes from downtown Atlanta and Turner Field, Zoo Atlanta is one of Georgia's most loved institutions. Founded in 1889, it is one of the 10 oldest zoos in continuous operation in the United States. In addition to the great conference topics, all attendees will receive complimentary admission to Zoo Atlanta each day. This groundbreaking conference is the first in over 5 years to exclusively feature the Dunbars and it is the first ever in Atlanta. The conference program will introduce attendees to the critically acclaimed and revolutionary program known as the Open Paw Program for Shelters - co-founded by Kelly Dunbar in 2000. This program, heralded as an international, community-based humane education program, is literally changing the way the world addresses the problem of unwanted animals. Specifically, Open Paw has two goals: to provide people and their pets with the tools they need to develop lasting and successful relationships with one another and with their communities and; to turn every animal shelter into a community education center. In addition to Open Paw, Dr. Ian Dunbar, world renowned veterinarian, animal behaviorist, host of the British television series "Dogs With Dunbar" and founder of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the largest association of professional trainers in the world, will examine the timely topics of elevating the dog training profession as a whole and animal dominance. On Saturday, December 6th, Kelly Dunbar will deliver two separate morning sessions on Open Paw. The first of these is An Introduction to Open Paw & Minimal Mental Health Requirements and will explore the concept of shelters as ambassadors for the humane treatment of animals and will introduce Open Paw and the “Minimum Mental Health Requirements for Shelter Animals”. The second session, Four Level Training for Dogs & Cats, will explore Open Paw's four levels of training which are designed to address the socialization, environmental enrichment, and behavior of sheltered dogs. In the afternoon, Dr. Ian Dunbar will deliver a two part session entitled Raising the Bar in Dog Training in which he will examine the five stages of a comprehensive training program. On Sunday, December 7th, Kelly will present Implementing Open Paw in Your Shelter, which will examine the steps necessary for implementing Open Paw. In the afternoon sessions, Dr. Dunbar will deliver another two part session entitled Dissecting Dominance in which he will examine the concept of dominance and dispel popular myths concerning it. The general conference will close with a special hour-long question and answer session in which the Dunbars will field questions from the audience at large. The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) has approved "Weekend with the Dunbars" for 13 CEU’s.
